Chapter 24

For Greg, they were back to normal like nothing had happened. Shake the adversity off the heel of his shoe, straighten up, put on the family face, and get on with life. Filled with his family, the van was on autopilot trudging toward judgment. Today could land him an extra kick in the spine if a sniff of this latest indiscretion with the law and Laurie roused the nostrils of his parents. Never having savored the best end of a bad situation, he didn’t dare rest on the side of confidence. The legal bowl was the size of a pinhead in their town. Mountain high hope would be required to believe the mighty judge wasn’t informed about his son’s latest legal indiscretion. Greg squeaked past the gates as he’d done countless times. Like the strike of Big Ben, precise without fail, Sterling Jr. had already arrived; at least the presence of his two-seater sports car said so.

Routine offered a dose of reassurance. Greg parked in his normal spot, a car length beyond the heavy wooden doors that blocked out whatever light managed to find its way into the mausoleum called the Wright’s home. Swallow hard and fast. With stern direction and little tolerance, Greg had Laurie and the boys standing at the door in record time, waiting for the sacred invitation to enter. Hopefully Mom would answer and delay his amputation by a few moments. When she opened the door, glee danced inside. At least one iota of favor had fallen his way. Sunday afternoon was looking up.

Maybe he should consider taking his family to church more often, instead of his attendance being more of a peace offering for what happened more than two weeks ago. Laurie was kind of serious this time about not wanting to come home. Promises had to be made to get his family back under his roof. Laurie and the boys didn’t belong anywhere else, except with him, the man who cared about them more than anyone else in the world. Church three Sundays in a row was a small price to pay.

“My, my, well if it isn’t my prodigal son and his wife,” Virginia said, with arms outstretched for Greg.

Hugging his mother in return was a welcomed gesture. Sincerity, intensity, and inconsistent outward expressions of support weren’t factors. Right now was what counted.

“It’s only been three weeks.”

“I don’t know which is worse, you working or being off work. I don’t see you either way,” she said, easing something that felt like a check into his pocket.

The boys were getting jittery. Laurie stood motionless with a sharp-edged grin.

“You’re not pregnant again, are you?”

Laurie sucked her blossoming stomach in and pulled her shirt down tight, as close to her thighs as it would go. “No, I’m not pregnant. We are plenty happy with our six sons. We’re not looking to have any more.”

“Never know,” Greg teased.

“I do know.”

“I see you have a working woman now, son. Those days of having a doting housewife are over. A career woman is in the making.
